A/V Rack V2

This is the redesigned A/V Stand because the original shelves sagged and wobbled. The reason are detailed below. In addition to the change in the hanger bolts have been replaced with threaded inserts. This design can be knocked down completely. It also has lockable wheels and a power strip attached. The legs 2 by 2 inch made from 3 layers quarter sawn 3/4 inch sapele. The top and shelves are constructed using 15 mm Baltic Birch (They were supposed to be 12mm but there was a mistake at the lumber yard) tops with 18 mm ribs. The shelves are laminated in matte black Formica and the undersides are painted flat black. The legs are connected to prevent racking and are finished with 3 coats of amber shellac.

A/V Stand

I built this rack for my office to hold my stereo and TV in my office. The posts were made by laminating two 8x36 pieces of 4/4 Mahogany I found at the WoodCraft store. The shelves are made from 1/2 MDF with ribs cut from 3/4 MDF. As you can see by the sagging shelves in the photograph this was a design mistake. To make the shelves stiffer I have updated the design to use more ribs made from 3/4 plywood. The shelves are laminated with black matte Formica. The second design mistake was attaching the posts to the shelves with hanger bolts, this made for a nice aesthetic look, but caused the rack to wobble. This is solved in the updated design by adding cross pieces between the side posts.
