Day Nine
Heading home. Stopped at a BP station, but they were out of gas, so I got a bag of ice. I tried to fill up at the gas station next door, but after 10 minutes at the pump with only 2 gallons, I gave up. I stopped back at the Black Cat Coffee, and when I asked for an espresso poured into my cup, Coleen said, “That’s cute.” So I gave her the cup, and she said, “I will save it for you to use anytime you come in for coffee.” I didn’t bother to tell her that I don’t think I will ever return. I skipped my first planned stop, Neptune Beach, FL, because I was running late and needed to get to Charlotte, NC, for dinner that night. I did stop at Nutland and picked a pound of pecans for $11.00. I’m not sure just where it is; I just follow a billboard off the interstate. I tried samples of oranges, pecans, and boiled peanuts. The oranges had no flavor, and the boiled peanuts were salty and soggy, so I passed on both. I stopped at the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Airforce in Pooler, GA, for about 10 minutes. I didn’t have time to go inside but took pictures of F4A and a MIG 17. The next planned stop was Killian Park, which is just a couple of picnic tables next to a school.
Collen at Black Cat Coffee
The last stop for the day was in Charlotte, NC, where I met Chrystal, an old friend from my working days at Salmeri's Italian Kitchen in Fort Mill, SC. We talked a lot about old times, and the food was as good as Italian food could get in South Carolina. I had a passable double shot there to save the trouble of finding a coffee shop and found a Hampton Inn for the night.
